Each table shows the relationship between each main currency pair (in orange) and other currency pairs (in white) over various time frames.
Remember, currency correlation is presented in decimal format by a correlation coefficient, simply a number between -1.00 and +1.00.
Positive Correlation (+1):
- When the correlation value is close to +1, it means the variables have a strong positive relationship.
- This is like a dance where if one partner moves forward, the other follows. For example, the more you study (one variable), the better your grades might be (the other variable).
Negative Correlation (-1):
- A value close to -1 indicates a strong negative relationship.
- Think of it as a seesaw: when one side goes up (increase in one variable), the other goes down (decrease in the other variable). For example, the more you exercise, the less stressed you might feel.
No Correlation (0):
- A value around 0 suggests no relationship. It’s like two strangers passing in the night; what happens to one has no effect on the other.
- For instance, the number of hours you sleep might have no relation to the stock market movements (unless you’re a sleep-deprived trader!).
So what does all this have to with currency pairs?
A coefficient near or at +1 indicates that the two pairs have a strong positive correlation and will likely move in the same direction.
In the same respect, a coefficient near or at -1 indicates that the two pairs still have a strong correlation, but a negative one, resulting in the pairs moving in opposite directions.
A coefficient near or at zero indicates a very weak or random relationship.
