Setting your motorola baby video monitor up for the first time
It is never fun to get a new thing and have it take forever to get working right. This monitor is super easy to set up. Since the baby unit and the parent unit are already set up to work with each other, all you need to do is put the battery into the parent unit, plug both units in and turn them on.
Once both units are on, you should see the video displayed on the parent unit. Move the baby unit to a good location and adjust the camera so that you are able to see the area you want to monitor.
If you find you have a weak signal, it may be best to try moving the baby unit or the parent unit to different spots in the room. It is also a good idea to keep the monitor at least 5 feet away from products that may cause interference (other 2.4GHz products).
While most people find that this monitor works right away without any problems with their current WiFi routers or other electrical equipment, the manual gives you some hints as to what you can do should you find interference.
The video camera placed in your baby’s room is powered with an AC adapter.
The parent unit has a NiMH rechargeable battery pack as well as a power adapter. Before you use this the first time, Motorola recommends fully charging the battery before using. The battery pack takes approximately 16 hours to fully charge.
When the battery needs to be recharged, the battery icon on the parent unit will turn red and the unit will beep every 16 seconds to let you know that it is time to recharge the battery.
In their manual, Motorola indicates that the battery powered parent unit can run for 5 hours before needing to be recharged. It seems that some people have found that the time is less than this, but that could be a result of turning on the video more often, since the video takes more power to run.
Using the up, down, right and left arrow keys you can move the camera – panning and tilting the whole camera (not just the lens) – so that you can see just about anywhere in the room. It moves about 300 degrees side to side and about 160 degrees up and down. This is great because once your baby is a few months old, they tend to squirm about the crib and may go out of the camera’s view. With this monitor, you can adjust the camera’s view without needing to go into the nursery.
Once it gets dark, the camera automatically moves to infrared night vision, and your video will now be black and white. Otherwise your video is in full color.
If you want to get a closer view of your baby, you can with the 2X zoom that comes with this camera.
You can also control how bright the video display is. There are 5 levels of brightness to choose from.
The video will continue to display if the parent unit is plugged in. There is a button you can push to turn the video off if you do not want it on. Simply push the same button if you want to see the video again. This is a nice feature to have if you don’t want the extra light in your room when you are sleeping – all you have to do is push one button when you wake up and want to see how your baby is doing.
In order to conserve battery power, the video automatically turns off after a minute or so if you are running it on battery power. You can still monitor your baby with the audio and when you hear your baby crying or making other noises, simply push the video button and the video will display again, letting you see what your baby is doing.
The video plays at 25 frames per second, so you have great, clear video and the 3.5″ LCD screen is a great size for being able to see details. Many parents want the assurance that their baby is breathing well and with this screen you can watch your baby breathing whether it is on regular or night vision mode. No more squinting at smaller screens – this makes it easy to see what your little one is up to!
The 2.4GHz FHSS technology on this baby monitor gives you nice clear sound – one mom said it was like her baby was right next to her. There are 8 levels of volume that you control from your parent unit. While some have indicated that it would be nice if there was one button specifically for controlling the volume, it is not hard to navigate the menu feature to get to the volume control. You simply push the “menu” button and then the up or down arrows to get to volume control.
Bringing the volume to its lowest is like muting the monitor. However, you can still know what is going on in your baby’s room because there are 5 LED lights on top of the parent unit that visually indicate the level of noise in the room. If you have the sound turned down but see the lights suddenly go on, you know that your baby is awake and making noise. Turn the sound up or the video on to see what your baby is up to.
Two – way communication and Privacy:
The two-way communication is great for being able to tell your baby that you are coming, or to sing to your baby, or even to communicate with an adult that is in that room. It is a built in intercom system!
Motorola has built in data encryption so that your audio is completely private – providing security for you and your baby.
There are 5 lullabies available to you to play for your baby. This too is controlled remotely by the parent’s unit. One mom told me that when her baby wakes up, she talks to him and then turns on a lullaby and he goes right back to sleep. You can choose to play just one lullaby or you can let it play all five.
The Motorola Video Baby Monitor Alarm
Another nice feature this video monitor has is the alarm feature. You can set the alarm to ring at 2 hours, 4 hours or 6 hours (or you can keep it off completely). The parent unit will beep for 45 seconds and the alarm icon will flash red. If you are feeding your baby on a schedule or need to give your baby some medication, it is nice to have this alarm to remind you how much time has passed.
The Motorola MBP36 allows you to move freely about your house or yard while still able to monitor your baby. Your parent unit will indicate to you that you are out of range, should you get too far away. According to the manafacturer, both the video and the audio have a range of up to 590 feet (close to 200 meters).
Room Temperature Monitor
There is a sensor on the baby unit that reads the temperature in the room. This temperature is displayed at the top of the LCD screen of the parent unit. If the temperature goes above 29ºC / 84ºF or below 14ºC / 57ºF the readings will turn RED. It is nice to know that your baby is comfortable – not too hot or too cold.
The Motorola baby monitor is attractive and well designed. Mostly white with some brown, it looks good in any room.
The parent unit has the most buttons:
+- : UP/DOWN buttons: to tilt the camera upward or downward or to adjust menu settings.
<> : LEFT/RIGHT buttons: to pan the camera left or right or to access different menu options.
M : MENU button: to open menu options or exit.
O : OK button: to confirm a selection.

Parents consistently remarked they liked the large screen, the night vision, the 2 way intercom, the good reception as well as the temperature reading and the lullabies.
Several wished that the parent unit had some way to attach to their belt, rather than needing to set it down. But this minor inconvenience has not stopped them from saying that this monitor is well worth the price.
